Martinez stands by Howard

Everton goalkeeper Tim Howard was criticised by media and fans for his positioning in Bournemouth’s added time equaliser in Saturday’s 3-3 draw and it is not the first time that the United State’s international has been questioned this season.

Usually one of the Toffee’s most consistent performers, Howard has been under fire for his inconsistent performances in recent months and the 36 year old stopper is also struggling to get back into the USA squad following his decision to come out of international retirement.

There had been reports in the last few days that Martinez was set to battle city rivals Liverpool for the signing of Jack Butland who has been in exceptional form this season.

Martinez however appeared to still have complete faith in Tim Howard and his ability in the Capital One Cup press conference.

“Since Tim came back into the side after the previous round he has been very consistent, performing with a real influence over the back four.

The third goal was a real disappointment because it was the last kick of the game but as a team we should have done a lot better, not relying on the goalkeeper.

When someone has a free header in the six-yard box there has to be questions over the marking.” replied Martinez when questioned about Tim’s performance.

Howard however won’t be starting Tuesday’s quarter final match against Middlesbrough, with Spaniard Joel Robles set to continue his run in the cup after some great performances so far in this seasons tournament.

“Joel was man of the match in the previous round and he will start tomorrow – that is something which has been planned” said the Everton manager.

Unfortunately football is currently in a condition where managers say one thing and do another so it will be interesting to see how much confidence Martinez has in either keeper come the transfer window should he have funds available and a genuine target such as Butland available and interested in joining the club.
