Danny Ward impresses for Wales

Ward’s clean sheet for Wales against Latvia in Tuesday night’s Euro 2024 qualifier was Wales’ first clean sheet in 10 games and Ward’s first clean sheet since Leicester’s EFL cup win over MK Dons in December 2022.

The Leicester City keeper also played a significant role in Wales’ 1-1 draw last Saturday against Croatia to leave Wales joint top of their Euro 2024 qualifying group.

Having spent the majority of his career as second choice, both at Liverpool and Leicester City behind long term Leicester legend Kasper Schmeichel, Ward has grown used to having to be ready when injury strikes and certainly took his opportunity when first choice Welsh keeper Wayne Hennessey had to pull out due to injury.

Wales manager Robert Page was certainly pleased with his performances.

“I said to Wardy before he left, I think that’s probably been his best two games in a Welsh jersey” Page said.

It wasn’t just his shot stopping that impressed his manager though, who went on to talk about the bigger influence he had on the whole team against Latvia.

“He was that calming influence we needed when the ball was coming into the box.” he added.

Ward must now turn his attention back to domestic matters as he returns to his Leicester City team mates and has to focus on the very real relegation battle they find themselves in with just 10 games left to go.

In what is an incredibly close season in the bottom half of the Premier League, Leicester are just 1 point above relegation but only two points behind 12th place.

Ward is likely to return to the bench having lost his place to Daniel Iverson earlier in the month but is committed to giving all he has to ensure Leicester play in the Premier League next season.

“We have to give everything to keep the club in the league, it’s as simple as that.” Ward said.

“It will be tough, but we have to have a real united front with everyone involved and we will get there.” he added.

Leicester City travel to Crystal Palace on Saturday for their 3pm GMT kick off.
